5 Things You Must Do When You Visit Jamaica

Jamaica has quickly become one of my favorite travel destinations over the past couple of years. The weather is just right. The water is beautiful and relatively warm. And rumor has it that the waters are shark-free. I don’t totally buy this, but I could buy that there are very few sharks inhabiting the waters near the shorelines, which is almost just as comforting.

You could have the best vacation of your life (by my standards) if you booked it to Jamaica with only a handful of books, a bathing suit, a hat, sunscreen, and a towel. However, there really is plenty to do on the island, and at least five things that you absolutely must do if you choose to vacation there:

My Experience Being Queer, Black, and Female

I’ve been mulling over this post for approximately two years now. That was right around the time when I started thinking more seriously about my sexuality. It was also around the time when same-sex marriage was legalized in the United States, and when American media appeared to be picking up on the issue of police brutality and racial inequality. And let’s not forget about Patricia Arquette’s controversial Oscar acceptance speech, in which she initially appeared to be calling for a focus on women’s rights following ardent support from women for gay rights and black rights over the years*. I was pummeled by mixed emotion that year. I felt like I couldn’t read the news without coming across a national (or international!) issue resonating with me at my core. I had a hard time deciding which issue to focus my time and energy on or even where to focus my growing outrage. What should I be most vocal about? What was most important to me — my sexuality, my race, or my gender?

What I Loved: August 2017

Happy September, everyone! I don’t know about you, but I’ve been eagerly awaiting September since the last truly cool day of Spring. I sweat like a running faucet alllll summer long. The fact that 15 minutes of my commute is by foot does not help matters at all. And in case you think I’m exaggerating, I’ve literally had several strangers check in with me about the sheer amount of sweat I am exuding as I wait for my train. My body does not mess around.

While I hate the hot-hot heat of summer, there are plenty of things I do love about it and plenty of things I will miss. Without further ado, here are the things that really did it for me in August:
