On Call-Out Culture And The Perils Of Fandom

Okay, I have to talk about something that’s been bothering me for a while. Over the past few years, I’ve developed a huge issue with call-out culture and fandom. Let’s start with fandom. Fandom is a great thing, for the most part. I consider a fandom to be a group of people who all really, really like a certain thing. For example, almost everybody on Tumblr was in the Glee fandom from 2009 to 2012 (an exaggeration, but you know…). Fandom can be fantastic. It can be affirming to members of marginalized groups. It can bring people with similar interests from all over the world together. It can even bring people with otherwise really dissimilar interests together, too, which can ultimately help people to become more accepting overall. That’s great. Let’s keep that. The issue I see with fandom is what is typically referred to as “stanning.”
